Market Garden Worker Job Description 
  • Children’s and youth program support in school and community gardens
  • Support ideas for program fun
  • Support Cabbagetown Farmers Market every Tuesday
  • Help with garden maintenance and watering
  • Ensure program logging & photography/social media gets done

The Market Garden Workers will carry out the following duties and responsibilities:

OUTDOORS:

  • Create and lead fun and educational programs for children and youth in school gardens, collaboratively with co-workers and volunteers
  • Compost maintenance, building/repairing garden structures, fertilizing, watering, pruning, weeding, managing pests, and harvesting produce. Keeping sheds in good order.
  • Harvesting, hydrocooling, and dropping off at community kitchens or other food programs, and selling at Cabbagetown Farmers Market
  • Facilitate volunteer involvement in programs and garden maintenance
  • Help facilitate families’ involvement in the gardens if drop in program is active
  • Help lead teams of volunteers in different projects in the garden on request
  • Represent GTGK at the Cabbagetown Farmers Market on Tuesdays (help prepare with harvesting and transporting, set up table and talk about GTGK with community members)
  • Help with community partnerships in the summer by communicating with program staff and volunteers in other agencies, and support the urban agriculture community in Toronto by acting as ambassadors from Green Thumbs
  • Documentation of programs for various media, including social media and other projects as may occur. Documentation showing children’s faces must be pre-approved by our partner agency. Ask the program leaders before taking pictures.

INDOORS:

  • Blogging, tweeting, photographing and posting to instagram about events and what’s happening in the garden
  • Create signage and communications materials to promote programs and support education about gardening and composting
  • Track number of children and location of programs using Google Doc Program Log
  • Communicate with agency staff via WhatsApp or email for changes in scheduling 
  • Document and electronic-file program plans/activities/resources for programs you develop 
  • Track your time for payroll
