Project Manager –
One Year Contract $67,200 including MERCs
Position open until filled
Green Thumbs Growing Kids (www.greenthumbsto.org)
Mission: to cultivate environmental stewardship through hands-on garden and food education for urban children and their communities
Background
We operate three local inner-city school garden programs, one day per week each, a greenhouse program in spring, summer programs, youth programs after school in the school gardens, and also a Green Roof Garden for food production as a social enterprise. In winter, programs are delivered in classrooms, including vermicomposting, planting trees from seed and art/design content. We serve around 4,000 children and 200 youth each year. The population of children and families we serve is 70% newcomers, who face multiple barriers in settlement, including food insecurity. The school gardens are places to plant and harvest cultural favourites that are unavailable or expensive in the market. Our programs are led by Indigenous staff who are incorporating land-based pedagogy and language into their programs, bringing the Land Acknowledgement, heard every morning in school, to life. Indigenous mentors provide guidance and program enrichment. This position includes providing feedback to board and staff, in an immersive evaluation process over the contract term.
Key organizational questions relate to succession planning, designing for expansion, maintaining proper staffing and balance between social enterprise goals and our charitable mission. We receive multiple requests for help in new school gardens each year, involving travel. As part of this project, an e-bike will be purchased to support these requests. You will work closely with the Executive Director on all points herein described.
Requirements
-The successful candidate will have experience in urban agriculture, non-profit and/or charitable organizations at both board and staff levels, and social enterprise/small business.
-Experience in HR, staff supervision and evaluation, and strategic planning. You will be the main contact with strategic planning contractor(s).
-Hands-on gardening and urban growing experience
