Supporting Families Through Agriculture-Based Learning: Our Year with Rose Avenue’s Parent Drop-in

by Tristan Andrews

November 22, 2024

This year at Green Thumbs Growing Kids we hosted Rose Avenue's Childcare Centre for a weekly drop-in program in our Rose Avenue garden space from July to November, 2024.

In the warmer months (July-September) families tried produce we grew such as mint, Malabar Spinach, Kalette and Swiss Chard. Families also did a program where we taught them how to make their own edible microgreen cups made with peashoot seeds.

We also took advantage of the warm weather to have storytimes in the garden space, where we read gardening-based books/ illustrations and children would identify familiar items they've seen around the garden and elsewhere.

In the colder months (October-November) families prepared the beds for winter by covering the beds with fallen leaves from local trees.

Near the end of the season, families removed remaining plants from the garden beds and planted garlic cloves in the beds, afterwards they covered the beds with more leaves. By next spring the garlic will be ready and families can see/ harvest the results of their work.

The parent drop-in program is to provide opportunities for families to learn more about plants and urban agriculture.
