April 13 preview – Green Future Award of Distinction: Mark Cullen, Garden Educator, Writer, Br

“What more can we do together to encourage educators and government to get kids outdoors during the school day?,” Mark Cullen asked in his November 12th, 2016, Toronto Star Saturday edition feature. He then went on to welcome environmental and outdoor education organizations to his table to come up with answers. Green Thumbs immediately reserved our seat.

Mr. Cullen is not your average expert gardener. “For his contributions to promoting and developing horticulture education in Canada and for his ability to explain how Canadians can protect the environment,” he was named a Member of the Order of Canada in 2016, only the latest in a series of awards dating back to 1987.

Mr. Cullen currently reaches over 2 million Canadians per week through his radio broadcast, The Green File, his gardening features in the Star, his syndicated column, and other media platforms. He written more than 20 books, most recently The New Canadian Garden. “Mark’s Choice” garden products, a Bronze Sponsor of emergence, may be found at any neighbourhood Home Hardware.

Green Thumbs is honoured to be presenting Mr. Cullen, one of Canada’s foremost champions of school community garden programs and hands-on environmental education, our inaugural Green Future Award of Distinction at emergence. We know that, without the advocacy work that he and others like him inspire, a garden at every school will remain only another dream deferred.
